The day started with our group of six and many other groups all meeting outside the coventry leisure centre where our coach was picking us up, It was at this point that we were all told about the brief for the project, what, where and how the plans for the day were laid out. We were then dropped off at Westfield shopping centres bus station form here we all split up into out individual groups of six and began gathering data for the short video presentation that we were to produce after the day trip.
As we began to gather data through the means of photography, film, recording and even gathering any local newspapers, shop magazines, restaurant menus and even talking to complete strangers about how not only Westfield shopping centre has changed but also how the surrounding area (Stratford) has been transformed into this vast Olympic venue, bringing a wealthy amount of people through this particular borough of London, It was this aspect, the regeneration of a run down area, bringing a bundle of new jobs, shops and vastly different people into the area, which Is what I decided to focus my collection of data on.
However I also decided to gather info to counteract the positive side that the Olympics brings with a negative flip on the whole idea, as none of us were allowed into the actual Olympic village or anywhere near anything that was not automatically linked to merchandise or some form of product about the London 2012 Olympics. Even the security guards that were at at all of the gates that led into the Olympic area would not even speak to us or release any form of information regarding the Olympics. The only person that was willing to chat to us about his experience as a volunteer for the Olympics was Mike Cooper who has written a book about being a volunteer for various Olympics, who people will hear more about on the presentation video.
In the evening we then made our way to a conference titled – Resistance: The Best Olympic Spirit With speakers John Carlos, Doreen Lawrence & Janet Alder. The conference was interesting In many ways to sit through and to try and understand, however In my opinion It did rather stray away from the Olympic theme for this project. In my opinion It was more about the politics behind government and the corruption of certain parts of the legal system. Although I found aspects of this talk opened my personal opinions about corruption within the legal system etc I felt that It only really enhanced the Olympic project that we had just been set with regards to the ideas behind propaganda, which leads me nicely on to amount of merchandise which was been designed and already put on sale for the 2012 games, thus already starting to produce money. Truthfully although i wound John Carlos talk interesting to listen too, and amazing to hear the passion that he has pulsing through him I still feel that he’s talk was less about the Olympics and more to do with his personal beliefs with whats wrong In the world.
